Bob Karmelowicz, the Chiefs’ defensive-line coach for nine seasons, died Saturday at the age of 60.
Karmelowicz, who coached for the Chiefs from 1997 through 2005, had battled cancer of the nasal passages.
While with the Chiefs, he worked under three head coaches: Marty Schottenheimer, Gunther Cunningham and Dick
Vermeil. Perhaps his biggest achievement was making one of the game’s top pass rushers out of a little-known,
fourth-round draft pick from Idaho State, Jared Allen.
“’I’ve had the privilege of coaching with and against Karm for a long time, and he was one tough guy,” said
Cunningham, now Detroit’s defensive coordinator. “Though his coaching success on the field speaks for itself, I
will always remember him for how much he loved kids, his compassion for helping kids and how much he cared for his
grandkids. That will always be his lasting impression on me.”
Karmelowicz also coached for Cincinnati, Washington, Houston and spent last season with Detroit.
